Overview Sony, the major Japanese company manufacturing consumer electronics. It also participated in films, music, financial services, and other projects. Ibuka Masaru and Morita Akio founded the company in 1946 under the name Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation). The Japanese precision device company Ibuka supplied electronic devices during World War II, and Morita met with an applied sciences trainer during World War II as engineers designing heat-seeking missiles for the Imperial Japanese Army. Ibuka and Morita worked together over the next forty years in what was called "the most productive and interesting business relationship in history." Ibuka's genius in product development and Morita's mastery of business management and marketing helped turn Sony into one of the most famous brand names in the world. The company's official name became Sony in January 1958. The word itself was derived from the Latin "sonus" (sound) and was seen as an international term rather than Japanese. The company's first consumer product was an electric rice cooker. Although this product sold poorly, the company named Totsuko, abbreviated from the name, successfully sold radios, repair devices, and other electrical equipment. It had to adopt its repair business for the Japanese Broadcasting Corporation NHK by the American army, which later gave the young company its own repair jobs. In 1950, Totsuko introduced the first Japanese-designed tape recorder. Although this consumer product sold poorly, the company's fortunes were about to take a dramatic turn. In 1952, Ibuka visited the United States and made initial contacts to license the transistor from Bell Laboratories, then a division of Western Electric, the manufacturing arm of American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T). The following year, Morita went to the United States and signed the deal with Western Electric. This watershed agreement led to Totsuko's first highly successful production line: transistor radios. Although Texas Instruments was the first to market with the Regency transistor radio in 1955, the TR-63 radio, an inexpensive shirt-pocket-sized radio for all carriers, caught consumer attention when it was released in 1957. Sony's pocket-sized radios achieved tremendous success and gained international recognition under the company's brand name.
